Day 9 Mount Revelstoke N.P.

Mount Revelstoke N.P.: This is one of the smaller national parks of the country, although is one of the more flirtatious. Most of the year is covered with snow, is only the summer when it worth a visit. It is in this season when grow millions of flowers that given colorful to the landscape and flock of birds fly. We couldn't see so much because it was pouring with rain almost all day.

The most attractive excursion in the park is the Meadows-in-the-Sky Parkway. This is a 26 km winding road that ascends through forests of fir, cedar and spruce until the sub-alpine meadows of wild flowers of the summit of the hill. Along the road there are several viewpoints overlooking the valley and the town of Revelstoke. At the top is due to leave the car in the parking of Balsam Lake and from there a shuttle bus takes you to the area at the top. The Meadows-in-the-Sky Parkway ascends from 470 meters since the Trans-Canada Highway up to 1,500 meters above sea level on arrival at the Balsam Lake. The walk around the Balsam Lake is a short walk and along the Eagle Knoll Trail can get great views of Lake Revelstoke and the surrounding valley.

If you do not want to use the shuttle bus, you can go to the top by The Summit Trail, 1 km in length. At the top there are several circuits. One of them leads to Mount Revelstoke´s historic firetower with a view of 360 degrees, while the most popular is the Meadows-in-the-Sky Trail, one kilometer long, which leads through subalpine meadows. It is a very fragile ecosystem because it is covered by snow for nine months a year and its maximum splendor occurs from late July to early August, when the plants bloom. Several posters explaining the functioning of this ecosystem. In this area there is a longer trip that leads to the lakes Eva Lake, Miller Lake, Jade Lake.

Outside the area of Meadows-in-the-Sky Parkway there are other areas within the park that are worth visiting, such as the Giant Cedars Trail (30 km from Revelstoke), which runs for 500 meters between a rain forest of giant red cedars and firs. On the way there are several signs that identify plants and animals of the region. The Skunk Cabbage Nature Trail, 28 km east of Revelstoke, is home to many birds and a beaver. The best time to visit this wetland is during flowering occurs from May to July. Near Revelstoke is the Inspiration Woods Trail, a short walk between firs and white pines.
