Travel to the Austrian Danube

Day 4 Schlögen - Aschach

We started the day walking up to the viewpoint of Schlögen. We go from the campsite to the hotel, crossed the road, and just behind a yellow house there is a sign indicating Schlögenblick (Schlögen viewpoint). it takes about half an hour to reach the lookout. The first section allows us to contemplate the first views on the meander. The path, though steep, is very nice as it runs through the forest between trees and ferns. Finally we reached the viewpoint and the effort rewards us with wonderful views.

Schlogen

Schlögen

After getting off from the viewpoint of Schlögen, we go to camping and we ride on the bikes. Today we will explore one of the most beautiful stretches of the travel. We cross the Schlögen Loop along the right bank of the Danube. The walk is nice because we go in the shade of the trees and away from any road. After 4 kilometers we reach Inzell, where the river returns to its normal course. Here we leave the bike path and move along a road with little traffic.

We move forward about 5.5 kilometers and a little before reaching Haibach ob der Donau, we find a steep slope. I start to get a running start to overtake the slope of this secondary road but my daughter realizes that must not be taken and that the bicycle lane is diverted to the left. Although it is indicated, it is easy to skip the detour. Some kilometers later througth the bike lane we see many swans resting along the shore.

Castillo Neuhaus

Castillo Neuhaus

After 9 additional kilometers arrived at Camping und Pension Kaiserhof. From this place we saw on top of the hill, on the opposite bank of the Danube, the Neuhaus Castle (Burg Neuhaus) probably twelfth or thirteenth century. After several extensions, the most degraded areas of the castle were rebuilt after 1729. A few meters later found a table on the river bank overlooking the castle, a place that took the opportunity to stop to eat.

(in 27 km.) Aschach an der Donau: After 5 kilometers we pass the power plant of Aschach and soon after we reached the small town. My intention was to return by bus to Schlögen, but the bus just come out and the next one is not until three hours later. Therefore, I undo with the bike all the way until our accommodation and I return driving until Aschach again to pick up the rest of the family and enjoy all afternoon by the pool of the camping.

(in 15 km.) Schlögen: We drive back along the busy road 130 to our accommodation.
