Travel to Switzerland and Alps
Day 5 Grindelwald - Brienz (42 Km.)
(in 0 Km.) Jungfraujoch. In Grindelwald are one of the train stations of the Jungfrau. There are two hours of train since passing at Kleine Scheidegg pass through a tunnel of 7 kilometers, on the north wall of the Eiger. The train stops for a few minutes in Eigergletscher, at 2865 m., in front of some windows open on the rock wall, with a view of Interlaken and Brienz and Lake Thun. From here, the train still goes up further, to the Jungfraujoch station, which is the highest in Europe at 3454 m. altitude.
And then the arrival on the Jungfraujoch, in the heart of a glorious glacier world on the very roof of Europe! Superb views extend as far as the summits of the Vosges Mountains in France and the Black Forest in Germany. The Great Aletsch Glacier, at 22 km the longest ice-stream in the Alps, begins on the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe. In the village highlights the Ice Palace (ice maze of figures) and the astronomical observatory. From here there is a natural path of 10km.
The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region (UNESCO World Heritage since 2001) is the most glaciated area in the Alps, containing the Aletsch Glacier - Europe´s longest ice stream - and a remarkable range of classic glacial features such as U-shaped valleys, glacial basins, horn peaks and moraines. The area provides an outstanding geological record of the immense uplift and compression which formed the Alps many millions of years ago.
The diversity of flora and fauna is illustrated in the many forms of life found in the Alpine and sub-Alpine regions. Plant colonization following the retreat of the glaciers provides an excellent example of plant succession. The impressive views of the north walls of high-Alpine peaks, centred on the magnificent Eiger Mönch & Jungfrau, have played an important role in European culture.
Jungfrau - Ice Palace
