Travel to Iceland

Day 10 Seyðisfjördur - Höfn (497 Km.)

(52 Km.) Reyðarfjördur: This town takes its name from the fjord on which it is located, which is 30 miles long and 7 miles wide. It is the oldest and largest of the glacial valleys flooded by the sea in the area of the eastern fjords. The most interesting part of this village are the views, a pool semitermal that comes to 27 degrees and the museum on the Second World War.

(275 Km.) Höfn: The township of Hornafjordur, 2500 inhabitants, is dominated by the largest glacier in Europe, the Vatnajökull. In Hófn can do several things: It can be seen in port the vessels that carry fresh fish market, the Folk Museum, which is located in the oldest building in town, or Gamlabúð, which has a nice collection of birds and other animals and historical artifacts. But the main attraction is the Vatnajökull. You can do more than look to the glacier. There are agencies that conduct tours to the glacier with caterpillar trucks, with snowmobiles, walking, etc.

(85 Km.) Jökulsárlón: Taking advantage of a sunny day, we decided to bring forward part of the trip the next day and go see the Jökulsárlón. The move went well,as the next day was raining. The largest glacier in Iceland is the Vatnajökull, which has an area of 8,400 square kilometers is the largest in Europe, nearly three times more than all the Alpine glaciers together. In some parts reaches a thickness of one thousand meters. One of the most interesting places of this glacier is Jökulsárlón lake filled with icebergs and formed by the retreat of one of the major tongues of the glacier (about 140 meters per year). The continuing erosion of the mass of ice gradually filled the gap between the base of rocky highlands and the sea, accumulating at their feet a great deal of material forming small mounds and moraine. Including opening the lake, causing the separation of icebergs of different sizes, some of a blinding white, others blackened by the presence of detrital material.

In this lake you can take an excursion in an amphibian vehicle for 1500 kronas more or less. We climbed to the amphibian on land and this leads to the lake where we sailed for about half hour between the icebergs off the tongue of the glacier and go down to reach the ocean. Can be seen seals and ducks swimming between the icebergs.
