Travel to Portugal

Day 7 Algarve (Marinha, Benagil, Cabo San Vicente) (175 Km.)

(in 8 km.) Praia de Marinha: We go to the Benagil beach to rent canoes that allow us to go to the Benagil cave. This attraction is so popular that all the canoes are occupied and we reserve them for two hours later, time that we take advantage of to visit the neighboring Praia de Marinha. Belonging to the municipality of Lagoa, it is one of the most emblematic and famous beaches of Portugal, considered by the Michelin Guide as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe and one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world. This beach is not only famous for its cliffs, but also for the quality of the water. The beach of the Marina (Praia de Marinha) has often been used by international advertising agencies.

Accessing from the parking area, we find on the right a series of viewpoints that offer spectacular views over the rock formations of this beach, as well as some caves and the natural arch. On the left we find some long stairs that lead us to the beach. We went down by them and we bathed for the first time in the waters of the Algarve.

(in 3 km.) Praia de Benagil: We come back to the beach of Benagil. The main attraction of this place is to visit the Benagil cave, which is barely 60 meters from the beach. It can only be accessed by sea. To go to it we have three options: swimming, renting a kayak or one of the boat trips we can hire on the beach. We choose the second option.

Benagil cave

Benagil cave

In summer it is a little chaotic, because to enter the cave you have to avoid the amount of people entering or leaving it by swimming, kayaking or sailing. Inside the cave there is a small beach. The cave, also called Algar de Benagil or The cathedral, has been formed by the erosion of the waves on the rocks of the cliffs. In addition to the two natural arches that allow access to the interior of the cave, the orifice located in the ceiling, through which the sun's rays enter in the central hours of the day, stands out.

After the morning activities, we will eat at our accommodation in Armação de Pêra.

Cape San Vicente

Cape San Vicente

(in 77 km.) Cabo San Vicente: It is a geographical accident located in the southwestern corner of Portugal. The highlight of this place is the lighthouse that is located at the tip of the cliff. From this point to the north stretches a stretch of coast called Costa Vicentina, while to the east are the famous beaches of the Algarve. We take some pictures from the cliff located on the left of the road, from which you can see perfectly the building of the lighthouse built on the edge of the cliff.

Fortaleza fortress

Sagres fortress

(in 7 km.) Fortaleza de Sagres: On the way back to Sagres, we pass by the beaches of Tonel and Beliche. In the latter we can see the remains of the Beliche fort. The fortress of Sagres is surrounded by a wall of polygonal layout basted with half-bastions of 1793 located at the ends. In the center of the wall opens the Monumental Gate of the square, neoclassical style, crowned by a coat of arms in the pediment. On the interior embankment, there are six batteries facing the sea and sentry boxes. Stresses the Rosa-dos-Ventos, a large structure that is believed to date back to the sixteenth century. It represents a star with 32 rays, symbolizing the directions ("os rumbos"), inscribed in a circle, traced on the ground by irregular edges and that some authors believe to be the gnomon of a sundial.

Ponta da Piedade

Ponta da Piedade

(in 33 km.) Ponta da Piedade: We finish this spectacular day in the city of Lagos to visit this tourist attraction. After parking the car next to the 1913 lighthouse located in this place, we descend by stairs that take us to a small jetty. Ponta da Piedade is a group of rock formations. Formed by yellow-golden rocks that look like cliffs up to 20 meters high, they are one of the most famous tourist attractions in Portugal. From the jetty, from which boat trips depart to visit several of the caves located in the area, we see a pair of natural stone arches produced by erosion.
